He is responsible for the most gross-out, bro-manced and laugh out loud films of the last decade, including The Forty Year Old Virgin (2005) and Knocked Up (2007), which lovingly examine the make up of male relationships and pull apart the male psyche for comedic pleasure. On the surface Bridesmaids is a slice of a few weeks in the life of Annie (Wiig), who is forced to come to terms with the announcement that her best friend is getting married, and who doesn’t like the mirror which it holds up to her own life. Quickly her life is left in ruins when she comes to blows with the gang of Bridesmaids gathered for the wedding, forcing her to endure the bachelorette party from hell and turn on her best friend of nearly thirty years.
There have been many romantic comedies which follow this formula, such as achieves something greater than its male counterpart.
The group of female characters in the film are clearly extremes of some nature, with Helen (Byrne) being the bitch, Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey) the slut and Megan (McCarthy) the fat one, but they are all played with subtlety, especially McCarthy’s role as Megan who begins as a clown and has grown as a character by the end of the film. It is a shame that more time couldn’t be devoted to some of the lesser characters in the film, but it is Annie who is most carefully drawn and who is relatable to almost any member of the film’s audience. Wiig’s performance in the lead role is near perfection and if you weren’t a fan of her already there’s no doubt you will be after watching her gallop around the screen.
The script, written by Wiig and collaborator Annie Mumolo is funny, truthful and playful throughout with moments that feel like the actors have been caught when they thought the camera wasn’t rolling. They have gone to great lengths to make Annie’s story something all women can relate to in same way or another and to portray her relationship with best friend Lillian (Rudolph) as both touching and sincere.
