June 18

Project Learn La-Terre and Friends of the Bayou’s inaugural Great Gator Race is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 18 near Bayou Terrebonne in downtown Houma. Admission is free. Project Learn La-Terre is a nonprofit that provides GED classes and literacy programs, health fairs and community outreach. The upcoming race will raise money for the project’s community-outreach programs and annual Children’s Health Fair. The toy gators used for the event are 16 inches in length and made of wood. Each gator will have a number on it. The first 30 gators to cross the finish line will receive prizes — first place being a five-day cruise for two. The inaugural event will also feature live music in Courthouse Square, homemade arts and crafts for sale, food, drinks, carnival games and various activities for children, including a meet and greet with New York author Paul Rodriguez, author of the children’s book, “Goldysocks and the 5 Bayous,” which teaches children about land loss and coastal erosion. Troy Landry, star of the History Channel’s “Swamp People,” will make a live appearance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 18 at Rouses Supermarket, 5818 W. Main St., Houma. There will be soft drinks, cookies for the kids and an alligator sausage sampling.

The live Cajun music fais’ do-do is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 18 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 5396 Shrimpers Row, Dulac. Admission is $1. A meal costs $5. Music is provided by the Duet brothers and guests.

A dog wash is scheduled from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 18 at South La Seed Co. on Main Street in downtown Houma.

June 20-24

The Terrebonne Fine Arts Guild’s annual summer art camp program is scheduled from June 20-24 at the Downtown Art Gallery 630, 630 Belanger St., Houma. A registration fee of $25 per child is required. Each child attends class for five days, either a morning or afternoon class. Subjects range from various types of painting to working with clay. To register your child, visit the gallery. Telephone registrations are not accepted.
