History of a Relationship: Roger Federer & Cincinnati

A couple of days ago, I caught a Roger Federer interview on TV and there were two things that caught my attention outside of the typical Q&A. One of the things that was brought up was his success in Cincinnati but he was quick to correct that he has also had some bad years in Cincinnati.

That answer got me curious and I wanted to look back at Federer’s history at the Cincy tournament specifically. My own memory was failing me about Fed’s history with this tournament. Was it a rocky start? Did they have a few arguments before Cincinnati finally gave in?

I looked up the history on the ATP tour website and this is what I found. Roger Federer and Cincinnati did not start off on the best foot. At the age of (just turned) 19, he faced Francisco Clavet in the first round and lost in two tiebreaks 7-6(3) 7-6(4). After missing 2001 it appeared that Cincinnati was bitter about the avoidance so in 2002 he again lost in the first round. This loss came at the hands of Ivan Ljubicic in 3 sets 6-2 4-6 3-6. Cincinnati was so bitter that it was teasing Federer. Was Cincinnati ever going to give this guy a break?

The tournament in 2003 gave hope to his heart, but nope ... Again, it would be denied by a match against David Nalbandian, who in 2003, Federer had not yet understand how to fight. At least he got the second round so maybe Cincinnati has been warming to him, but alas ... the following year, he found himself immediately at the start of a first round loss to Dominik Hrbaty. Maybe it was just not a relationship supposed to be.

But then came 2005 and the heart of Cincinnati finally melted and Federer welcomed with open arms. It was not an easy path to win the heart of Cincinnati.He had to fight for it every step of the way, but the Fed is not going to back down easily this time. Roger & Cincinnati continued to have their struggles, but seeing as how he won the title four times and going for its third consecutive year ... it seems to be a recipe for a long, successful relationships.

The other thing that has grown up in this interview that Federer has rented a house this week, as opposed to keeping the same adjustments as in previous years. Tennis players are superstitious lot to play with everything that "works" until it does not, it's like to play with their games. Federer’s answer was simple. He has a family that travels with him so more space is needed. Hopefully, Cincinnati will not hold his priority against him. Seeing that he got by Juan Martin Del Potro so easily last night…I think things are all good.
