La Vita Nuova, Elephants, and Augmented Reality: Sony Playstaion Press ...

Sony gave their official 2011 E3 Playstation press conference on Monday, June 6 at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.  The three main hosts were Jack Tretton (President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America), Kazuo Hirai (President and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment and President of the Consumer Products and Services group of Sony), and Scott Rohde (Senior Vice President for Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment of America).  This year, Sony was the name and connectivity was the name.  Promises and apologies were made as Sony attempts to reabsorb the lost hearts of many astray, infatuated Playstation users.  Drug dealing at its finest! The play started out with Mr. Tretton walking out with a pink shirt on, speaking about how this was not the first time he presented at E3 with an “elephant in the room” and apologized to developers and consumers for the long “network outage.”  Perhaps the pink shirt fits the whole elephant theme (hint: think pink elephants from the Dumbo movie).  He stated that the network activity of the PSN is at 90% of what it was before the outage.  He also stated the services people can currently use on PSN are HuluPlus, VUDU, MLB TV, NHL Game Center, Music Unlimited (Qrioctiy services), and Netflix. Playstation 3 is the leading device used for Netflix services, at about 30% of all Netflix usage.  A new partner was revealed for the media access of PS3 and they are called Cinema Now.

Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, Naughty Dog Co-Presidents, were introduced to show gameplay footage of their new game, “Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception.”  The level they played showed some cool lighting effects and some new moves for ol’ Nathan Drake.  It showed that you do some sneaky moves, sort of in a Metal Gear style, and drag bodies out of the way.  They stated that the multiplayer beta would available on June 28 and that in October, a new promotion would begin involving a joint effort between them, Sony, and the Subway sandwich company.  This promotion would allow Subway customers to get early access to the complete (“NOT an early BETA” in their own words, “the entire competitive game”) competitive multiplayer experience.  The trailer they show at the end of their presentation lists 11/1/11 as the release date.  You can find more information here: Uncharted 3

Insomniac Games Creative Director, Marcus Smith was up next.  He gave a brief introduction to their new game, “Resistance 3.”  The gameplay demonstration he presented was in 3D and took place in St. Louis.  This game will have 3D support and functions for the PS Move.  Mr. Tretton then came in and told the audience that the game will be offered in a new sharpshooter bundle.  It will be called the “Doomsday Edition.”  The contents of the bundle will include the “Resistance 3” game, a sharpshooter holder,  a PS Move motion controller, a navigation controller, and a PS Eye camera.  The bundle will be priced at smooth 150 dollars.  Killzone 3/PS Move fans should love this game.
