Emotion, passion drive culture of cars
Cars are just transportation to many of us. But to thousands of Southern Arizonans there is an emotional attachment that makes them something more, a part of our lives even after they're parked.
The attachment is often a return to our first days of driving - like the baby boomers who now can afford the '66 Mustang they wanted in high school.
It seems like every model of car has its devotees. DesertCruisers.com , a website for car clubs and shows throughout the Southwest, lists nearly 300 car clubs statewide, with more than 40 in Southern Arizona.
The groups range from one for owners of any European-make automobiles (Arizona Europeans) to one just for owners of 1954 Fords (54 Ford Club of Arizona).
And there are plenty of events - formal car shows, "cruise-in" nights at local restaurants and bars, and group tours that wind among small towns around the state.
They're not all for old and expensive cars. There are plenty of new Mustangs on display at car shows and cruise-in nights. There's even a club for the humble Chrysler PT Cruiser, a bargain car with retro style.
There's something almost every night of the week - from cruise nights at one of the Lucky Wishbones around town, or the twice-a-month Saturday night shows at Little Anthony's Diner on the east side.
