Daley would be 'most devastated' with loss to Woodley

Strikeforce welterweight Paul "Semtex" Daley sees his next fight as his final chance for a major belt.

"The next shot for me in Strikeforce is going to be the shot, the final shot," Daley says. "It'll be the one that I take most seriously, and I would be most devastated if I lose, because you're very fortunate to get one title shot on these big shows, let alone two."

A few months after taking part in the most exciting round of mixed martial arts this year in a loss to then-champion Nick Diaz, Daley will take on undefeated prospect Tyron Woodley on July 30 in Hoffman Estates, Ill. The highly touted Woodley had been mentioned as a potential title challenger before Diaz vacated the belt to challenger UFC champion Georges St. Pierre, so a win could put Daley right back into contention for gold.

USA TODAY spoke to Daley last week about the Diaz bout, upcoming Woodley fight and his future in general. Excerpts from the conversation:

You decked Diaz twice but couldn't quite finish him. Looking back, what do you think you could have done differently?

I think I could have just maybe been a little bit more patient and not got into a sort of slugging match, and took my time with my shot. Because we always knew I had the power to put him down and put him out.

But the opportunities that I got when I did put him down were slightly rushed. They were in the thick of things, rather than picking the shot at the right time.

But Nick's a tough guy. We knew it was going to be a tough fight. I think I did well and I think I could have done even better.

I had been having a lot of fights and to take such a big fight so close to some other fights … may have been a little too much, but I thought that I was capable of doing it, so we took the fight. But Nick's a good champion.

How often do you want to fight?

It's like a double-edged sword, because I always say I like to be busy. I like to take fights. I like to keep active.

But I think when you have a championship fight, that's sort of like the time when you should prepare for such a big fight, and I didn't have the time that I'd like. I think I had like four or five weeks after coming off the (Yuya Shirai) knockout.

So I like to be active, but for the big fights, I'd rather have some time to concentrate and make sure everything's in the place and how it needs to be to run a successful training camp.
