Gas Lamp doing it "For the Love of Broadway"
But before there can be comedy tonight, the Gas Lamp Players' young actors have to get through a rehearsal today. Director and writer Kristy Graves is trying to keep the children in line and out of the wings – while trying to make herself heard over the drone of the air conditioner, running full blast against the hot, humid weather.
At the piano, musical director Paul Budd (a/k/a "the Piano Dude") strikes up the opening notes for "Comedy Tonight" from "A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum."
Yes, it's a Monday morning in early July, and rehearsals for "For the Love of Broadway," Gas Lamp's summer workshop show, are in full swing. Last year's show, "Gas Lamp Lights Broadway," took patrons on a musical journey from Broadway's early days through the early 1960s. This year's show picks up where last year's left off, in the 1960s, and finishes in the 1980s.
There's a difference this year, says Gas Lamp director Jessica Sporn: While last year's was essentially a walk through Broadway history, "This year is focused on, why did the movers and shakers do it?" Sporn says. The reasons are many: "Most of them did it for love," she said.
Sporn is stepping back from her usual role as overall director, leaving direction and production to Graves, producer Amy Baldassare (nicknamed "the Grand Poohbah"), choreographer Mindy Wedner and a host of theatrical stalwarts. Instead, Sporn is working behind the scenes as a costumer.
"I'm taking a very backseat role this year," she said.
The musicals referenced in the show run the gamut, from well-worn chestnuts such as "A Sound of Music" and "Fiddler on the Roof" to the decidedly more cynical "Chicago" and the spirit-of-the-60s "Hair."
"It's just this really broad range of Americana, in a way," Sporn says.
Some of the shows, such as "Hair," are snapshots of what was going on in America at the time they were written, Sporn says. Others, e.g. "Annie," were written fairly recently yet examine life in a bygone era.
The cast is comprised of 86 children ranging from ages six to 13. Overseeing the cast, in addition to the directors and producers, are a corps of junior and senior counselors between ages 14 and 19. The counselors are on hand to assist with staging and theater games, along with minor emergencies such as scraped knees or a cast member losing a baby tooth.
"We get a lot of loose teeth because of the age (of the cast)," said Baldassare.
