Most of these books are for those who already have some knowledge of a particular martial art form or several self-defence systems. Reading about self-defence is a slow and rocky road to acquiring self-defence techniques.

Often, it doesn’t take place at all. At best, the reader will acquire knowledge of a particular martial art form. At worst, the reader can only hurt himself when he practises without proper guidance.

Bruce Kumar Frantzis has spent 50 years studying oriental healing arts, meditation and martial arts. So he is in a good position to expound his hard-earned knowledge about the internal power that can be harnessed from a human body.

The pages that are most fascinating are the personality profiles of the various martial arts sifus that Frantzis has met in his long journey towards enlightenment and a high degree of martial art skill.

Altogether there are descriptions of seven internal energy masters in this book. The first name in the roll of honour is Wang Shu Jin.

Frantzis met Wang in 1968. As it turned out, the sifu of incredible qi was not only obsese, he was also a senior citizen and looked like a retired wrestler.

The author was quick to learn that looks could be very deceptive because Wang allowed himself to be hit and yet stood looking rather pleased with himself.

In one demonstration of his remarkable power of qi, Wang lightly tapped Frantzis on the head and sent him slumped to the ground. In the writer’s words, it was “as if I had just been jolted by a high voltage electrical current”.

In the world of Chinese martial arts, the physical is less important than that is the lifeblood of body and mind.

In his experience with Tai Chi Master Cheng Man-ching, Frantzis discovered that there was more slow movements movements that everything that could be put into words.

Although the writer spent two weeks with Cheng, he reveled in the knowledge that a slow blow lotus could generate more power than a high-powered karate blow spinning round-house.

In his decades-long quest for martial art enlightenment, Frantzis also had the pleasure of befriending Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido.

Ueshiba was an gigantic reservoir of internal energy. His looks belied his baffling Aikido skills. When he was in his 80s, the sensei still could throw his students a fraction of his age around the dojo like cotton pillows.
