Teacher Offers Lessons for a Lifetime
For the students of Highland Park public schools, summer break began on Friday, June 24. The years worth of studies were replaced with sun, surf and sleeping late. But for the students of Lizbeth Medines 1st grade class at Irving Primary School, there are some lessons that will surely carry beyond the school year and even their teacher hopes last a lifetime.Medine, in collaboration with Irving teacher Vicki Zarra, designed a project about Memorial Day. The task for students was to read for exposure and information about why we honor the fallen soldiers and the significance of the holiday, says Medine. And while Medine set of to fulfill New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, the set of education requirements for each grade, she also aimed to engage her young students further. The donation box quickly filled. The response from families was, as Medine describes, beyond generous. Homemade baked goods joined cans and boxes of all types. The 24 students of Medines class then combined their new knowledge about Memorial Day with their writing process strategies and wrote letters to 12 veterans. Their messages mix the innocence of their age with their new insights gained, including how Memorial Day began after the Civil War: Thank you for serving our country. It is very nice to offer to be a soldier. I hope you are safe in the next war. Always remember to be prepared, wrote one student while another penned, Thank you for fighting for our country. You are very brave. I wish your friends had not died during the Civil War. Then, says Medine, To make it realistic and relevant, the students addressed the envelopes and I sent them through the U.S. mail. The plan was for this simple social studies lesson to be rigorous in terms of content and expectations, relevant in age-appropriateness and realistic in activities and assessment, says Medine as a seasoned elementary educator. And then, I am so proud that this lesson and its unexpected, wonderful surprises will continue next school year when we plan another project with the veterans.

As time has gone by, many traditions associated with Memorial Day have been left behind and forgotten. Now, if you ask many children what Memorial Day is about, they remark, “The day the pool opens!” or “The beginning of summer!” It is time that we reclaim the memorial—the remembrance of those who fought so proudly so that we can be free to enjoy our precious God-given liberties.
