Galaxy Notebook: Beckham has stress fracture

CARSON - Landon Donovan is back with the Galaxy.

Now the concern is getting David Beckham's back back.

The 36-year-old midfielder, who has missed two games with what was described as back spasms, revealed he actually has a "slight" stress fracture in his spine, and his availability for tonight's home game against Seattle Sounders FC appears to be unlikely.

"I'm not sure yet," Beckham said of the chances of his return. "I'm going to see how it reacts. I've had a lot of a treatment, a lot of work done. Hopefully it reacts in the right way.

"I don't know whether it's an old injury or a new injury, it's one of those things that just flared up. It's not a big problem. I'm back with the guys training. The pain 10 days ago was bad. I hate missing the guys, I hate missing training, so it's been a miserable couple of weeks."

With or without Donovan and Beckham, the Galaxy are riding a 10-game unbeaten streak to remain on top in the Western Conference. In the games the Galaxy played while Donovan was with the U.S. national team, the Galaxy went 1-0-3.

"We didn't win enough, but we didn't lose any, either," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said.

The Galaxy (9-2-8, 35 points) are being pushed by FC Dallas (34 points with a game in hand), but Seattle (8-4-7) is in the hunt as well, thanks to a 4-0-2 run. The Sounders have picked up all 31 of their points since their 0-2 start.

The teams opened the season in Seattle with the Galaxy scoring a 1-0 victory.

"They're doing great," Arena said of the Sounders. "They've accumulated a lot of points in the last six to seven weeks."

Perk of the job

The Galaxy will have a new face to introduce when they take the field. Brian Perk, 22, will be the goalkeeper following the broken arm suffered by starter Donovan Ricketts and the red card that backup Josh Saunders picked up last weekend in San Jose.

Arena holds the philosophy the team doesn't change just because a second-year player makes his MLS debut. But some of the players will approach the game believing the former UCLA standout will need more help than otherwise required.

"It's really no different," Arena said. "We have to play as a team, defend well, but we're not going to change anything we do because Perk's in the goal."

Central defender Gregg Berhalter, who has played extensively with Perk in reserve games and in Tuesday's U.S. Open Cup game, sees a difference.

"We're comfortable with him, but it does change," Berhalter said.
