Business fees going up in Greenacres

The city council voted 4-0 tonight to approve on second reading an amendment to the city's code that increases business registration fees and streamlines the registration procedures.

Building Department Director Michael Grimm said in a June 13 memo that the fee increases, expected to generate an additional $8,000 in revenue, were made following an analysis of business tax receipts in nine other Palm Beach County cities.

Some examples of the fee increase include:

* Licenses for amusement and vending machines will rise from $127. 62 to $134

* Home occupation licenses will increase from $63.78 to $66.96

* And the annual fee to operate a rental property will go from $31.83 to $33.42.

The license fee for restaurants and food vendors will not increase because, at $203.75, it was already higher than those in eight of the nine other cities.

Changes to the application procedures should allow 90 percent of applicants to receive business tax receipts, formerly called occupational licenses, with one visit to the Building Department, Grimm's memo says.

One change allows business owners to obtain their licenses without a prior inspection but requires them to schedule and pass the inspection within 30 days of applying for the license.

In other business, city manager Wadie Atallah said the city might call off its "Ignite the Night" Fourth of July event because of a burn ban in Palm Beach County prohibiting fireworks. A decision is expected to be made later this week.
