Shine light on abuse of elderly

The study , conducted over three years, included telephone interviews with a statewide sample of residents ages 60 and older to estimate the prevalence of various forms of elder abuse in the New York state. In all, more than 4,000 older New Yorkers took part in research interviews about their experiences with physical, psychological, sexual abuse, and with neglect and financial exploitation. The groundbreaking study, the first statewide study in the nation, found that one in 13 older adults in New York state suffered elder abuse in a one-year period. The most prevalent, and fastest growing, form of elder abuse was found to be major financial exploitation — theft of money or property, using items without permission, impersonation to get access, forcing or misleading to get items such as money, bank cards, accounts, power of attorney. The results also point to a dramatic gap between the rate of elder abuse reported by older residents and the number of cases served by formal elder abuse service systems in New York. For every case referred to authorities for intervention, another 24 victims went without assistance. The full report of the New York State Elder Abuse Prevalence Study is available at the Lifespan of Greater Rochester website: lifespan-roch.org. Growing older can pose many challenges; mistreatment by family members and other trusted individuals should not be one of them.

Older adults should not have to suffer mistreatment in silence. If you are the victim of mistreatment or know someone who is, help is available through Lifespan's Elder Abuse Prevention Program by calling (585) 325-2800, or your county's adult protective program.

On a regular basis we see media coverage about older people being mistreated. Elder abuse takes place in many different settings – for example, the older person’s home, care homes, nursing homes and hospitals. It happens when an older person’s human rights and dignity are violated. It can come through financial scams, physical attacks, sexual abuse, psychological abuse or neglect. The perpetrators are often in a position of trust and have control of the life of the older person. Elder abuse can also include actions that many people might not consider. For example, physical abuse can include inappropriate use of medication or force feeding, emotional abuse can include treating an older adult like a baby or otherwise injuring his or her dignity, and sexual abuse includes any sexual contact with a person who is incapable of consenting. It is a stark fact that many non-Christian communities esteem their elderly people far more than does the Western church. We should main-stream the older people in our churches: honour and make space for their input, and seek their prayers and wisdom. We should make many fewer mistakes if we did! And old people would feel much better about themselves, and be spurred on to greater things rather than just feeling a waste of space.
