Tyler, The Creator On Gay Row
Tyler, The Creator has spoken out after receiving criticism for the content of his lyrics.
Hip hop's attitude to homosexuality is notoriously fraught. Rappers frequently use words such as 'faggot' to describe their opponents, while some have built a career out of misogyny and anti-homosexual sentiment.
Enraging gay rights groups, some have argued that such lyrics are simply an exercise in freedom of speech. Exploding out of Los Angeles, Odd Future have re-opened the debate with some dark, corrosive rhymes.
Tyler, The Creator recently released his new album 'Goblin' which uses phrases such as 'faggot' a total of 213 times. American magazine Fader studied the album, breaking the insults down into separate categories.
The critical praise heaped on the rapper prompted an open letter from Canadian duo Tegan & Sara, which slammed both the MC and his fans.
"While an artist who can barely get a sentence fragment out without using homophobic slurs is celebrated on the cover of every magazine, blog and newspaper, I'm disheartened that any self-respecting human being could stand in support with a message so vile."
The Odd Future rapper responded on Twitter by saying: "If Tegan and Sara need some hard dick, hit me up!"
Causing an enormous storm, gay rights groups stepped in to announce that they were monitoring Odd Future. Speaking to MTV News , Tyler, The Creator explained that he did not feel his rhymes were offensive.
"Well I have gay fans and they don't really take it offensive, so I don't know. If it offends you, it offends you" he said. "If you call me a n***a, I really don't care, but that's just me, personally. Some people might take it the other way, I personally don't give a shit."
