back behind the plate
MINNEAPOLIS — He's back.Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer was officially reinstated from the disabled list Thursday and will be behind the plate and in the Twins' lineup for Friday's game against San Diego. It will be Mauer's first game in a Minnesota uniform since April 12, as he's missed more than two months with bilateral leg weakness.
Mauer's return comes as the once-struggling Twins have finally started winning games.
"We just kind of got on a roll here, I think it's 11 out of 13. I think that's what we should be focusing on, winning ball games," Mauer said after the Twins beat Chicago, 1-0, Thursday. "Me coming back, I want to be a part of that."
Earlier Thursday, Twins shortstop Tsuyoshi Nishioka was back in the lineup after missing two months with a broken leg. Also activated from the disabled list Thursday was left-handed reliever Glen Perkins, who missed nearly a month with an oblique strain.
Piece by piece, the oft-injured Twins are starting to put their opening day roster back together.
"We get Nishi back in the lineup. We're getting (Mauer) back tomorrow, Perk back in there for tomorrow. That's three pretty good players," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We hope that we're kind of working towards that, having the players you started out in spring training with being there along with a few people that have done a pretty good job up here right now."
The Twins had to move Mauer from the 60-day disabled list back to both the 40-man and 25-man rosters. To do so, they outrighted outfielder Brian Dinkelman to Triple-A Rochester. Minnesota also optioned pitcher Chuck James to Rochester to make room for Perkins on the 25-man roster.
Without Mauer, Minnesota went 23-33 and fell far behind Cleveland and Detroit in the American League Central standings, at one point trailing the Indians by 16.5 games in early June. Over the last few weeks, however, things have started to click for the Twins, who are now nine games behind the first-place Tigers.
Now they'll plug their all-star catcher back into the lineup.
"This place is going to be rocking this weekend when he comes back," outfielder Ben Revere said.
"He's always been a great hitter. He's the best hitter in the league," infielder Alexi Casilla said. "He's back, and the way the team's playing, we're going to get back on track."
Mauer rehabbed in Fort Myers, Fla.
