You’ve heard of companies like HP, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo—you probably bought one of your last laptops from one of these manufacturers—but the laptops they sell are often preconfigured to suit the needs of a certain kind of consumer. But the needs of gamers aren’t like that of the average Joe, and they certainly don’t want to be constrained by a certain CPU and GPU. They need more customization than what these major PC manufacturers offer when configuring your laptop. Enter boutique PC builders like iBuypower and Mainger (to name a few), that offer custom gaming laptops.

These smaller companies offer a short list of base configurations, usually by screen size, and give you a plethora of choices before checkout to design the laptop, internally, to suit your needs; from processor to hard drive size and speed. Gaming PCs ( *cough* Alienware *cough* ) aren’t known for their subtlety in design, so some of these boutique companies do offer customized paint jobs, but it’ll cost you. Likewise, commissioning a custom laptop can cost you or save you money, so depending on the vendor and the parts used (i.e. aluminum chassis vs. a plastic one) you may stay in your budget or have to dig a little deeper into your wallet. Most of these PC builders are geared more for the hardcore gaming crowd than the mainstream consumer, but certain vendors do make their products more accessible than others by arranging their Web pages accordingly, and explaining who would want X product. Note that while we realize that there are more custom builders out there, these companies are ones that we’ve reviewed products for and know are reliable.
