Carnival Magic ship review
At a glanceWhen global recession hit in 2008, Carnival Cruise Lines quit Europe, deciding to keep its ships close to home so Americans didn’t have the cost of flying to join a cruise. But they’re back this year, with what I think is their best ship.
The 3,690-passenger Carnival Magic, christened in Venice in May by Lindsay Wilkerson, a former patient of a children’s cancer hospital in Tennessee, is also their biggest ship and most un-Carnival in terms of décor and style.
With its children’s’ and teen clubs, waterslides and an adult-only sunbathing hideaway, it’s perfect for both families and young couples who want a lively holiday and don’t mind sharing it with thousands of others.
A new top-deck “Sports Square” has the first ropes course at sea, an outdoor gym, mini-golf, a basketball court and a bar. RedFrog, on deck five, is Carnival’s first pub, serving its own-brand beer, ThirstyFrog Red. It is a great venue – and the beer was so popular that they had to send to the US for emergency supplies just a couple of days into the inaugural cruise.
The drinks aren’t cheap – a pint of ThirstyFrog costs $6.33 (£4) including a compulsory 15 per cent gratuity; Mojito cocktails are $10.06 (£6.30). The speciality restaurants, on the other hand, are a bargain.
Prime, the steakhouse, costs $30 (£19) per person, which is very reasonable given the quality of the meat they serve, while the new Cucina del Capitano Italian restaurant, also a great venue, costs $10 (£6.29). If you want a table in either, you have to book fast, though; on my cruise they were full every night.
Carnival Magic is sailing seven-, nine- and 12-night cruises from Barcelona, before moving to Galveston in Texas in October to cruise in the Caribbean.
Carnival offers a choice when it comes to evening meals in the
dining room. There’s the traditional two-sitting arrangement, where you are
allocated a table and a time to eat for the duration of the cruise, or “Your
Time Dining”, where you are free to eat when and with whom you want. The food in the main dining room, open also for waiter-service
breakfasts and lunches, was surprisingly good given the numbers they are
catering for – 1,248 in one sitting – but it is better in the speciality
restaurants. The self-service restaurant is divided into separate stations
serving Mongolian and Indian food, deli-style sandwiches, burgers and pizzas.
