W.Va. turns out to see 'piece of history'

The plane that was US Airways Flight 1549 is expected to finally make it to North Carolina this afternoon - but just barely.

The New Jersey movers delivering the 120-foot-long fuselage are scheduled to park it for the night at a truck scales station just over the N.C. border on Interstate 77. On Friday, the plane will start the final part of its ride to Charlotte's Carolinas Aviation Museum, where it will be reassembled and become a permanent exhibit.

"By that time, we'll be able to move 55 mph and it won't take long to get to Charlotte," said museum President Shawn Dorsch, who has been following the plane with his wife and two miniature schnauzers.

Wednesday, it got a hero's welcome in West Virginia, as thousands lined roads, bridges and hills to catch a glimpse of the plane before it stopped just north of Bluefield, W.Va..

Earlier, at Braxton County High School and Braxton County Middle School, 67 miles north of Charleston, W.Va., more than 700 students, teachers and administrators stood on a hill over I-79 cheering, holding signs and American flags as the plane was pulled south.

Dawn Dooley, the high school's principal, said it was the last day of school and "we thought it was a great opportunity for the kids to see a piece of history."

Dozens more stood at windows in the West Virginia capitol building in Charleston, hoping to get a glimpse of the plane as it pulled off I-79 onto I-77 south.

Dorsch was pleased by the state's reception. "West Virginia is out in force," he reported.

"There's just hundreds of people up on that bridge to get a look at the plane. This is very humbling."

The rig carrying the plane is expected to leave from Mount Airy at 8 a.m. Friday, traveling south on Interstate 77, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol, which will provide an escort. It's expected to reach the Mecklenburg County line between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. and continue on I-77 to I-85 South. The plane will be transported along Billy Graham Parkway to West Boulevard and finally Yorkmont Road near the museum.
