Newcrest Cuts Fiscal Year Gold Production Guidance To Around 2.7 Million Oz
SYDNEY -( Dow Jones )- Newcrest Mining Ltd. (NCM.AU) cut its estimate of full-year gold production by up to 5.4% to 2.7 million troy ounces Thursday, citing power problems at its Lihir Island mine in Papua New Guinea and other site delays.
The company said a failure of a high voltage switchgear at Lihir's power station had interrupted production and the plant is currently running at reduced capacity.
"Repair work in the power station has commenced and a phased return to full operating capacity is planned over the next three weeks," the miner said.
Newcrest is the world's fifth-largest gold miner by production. A full-year production estimate of 2.85 million oz-2.95 million oz at the time of its half-year results earlier this year was cut in April to 2.82 million oz, plus or minus 35,000 oz.
