Charity's in stitches

ENID Richards is a knitting addict. She has been knitting since she was eight and still gets her daily fix 86 years later.

“I saw my mother doing it and I said ‘I can do that', and so she told me to grab a pair of needles and she taught me to cast on and I've been casting on ever since,” Mrs Richards said.

The first item she knitted was a scarf and since then she has gone on to knit thousands of jumpers, rugs, blankets, beanies and baby clothes, not only for friends and family but for Australians in need.

Mrs Richards has taken up her needles for the Guardian Angel Knitting Program every year since its inception 13 years ago. The program encourages all levels of knitters to knit warm items for less fortunate Australians. The items are then distributed by Variety to those in need.

Now 94 and living in a nursing home, Mrs Richards says she cannot knit as she used to but she still does her best.

“My hands shake a lot. It takes a week to knit something now that used to take a couple of days,” she said.

“But I love knitting. If you're stressed and you start knitting you forget about it.”

Like her mother, Mrs Richards passed down her love of knitting to her daughter, Nola Davies, who is also involved with the program and knits daily.

“I saw mother doing and so I did it too,” Mrs Davies said.

“It's just one way of helping people. Our skills can help others with a need.”

The program, which officially begins tomorrow, will run until August 31. For details about the Guardian Angel Knitting Program, visit www.guardianpharmacies.com.au or visit a Guardian Pharmacy for a free knitting pattern book.

It wasn’t until fairly recently that I realised that there were different methods of casting on in knitting, it turns out the method I had been using for years and which was taught to me by my mother is ‘Cable cast on’.Below are some of the more common cast on methods used today:

Cable cast on – Has a neat decorative edge and is good for knitting rib and makes an attactive edge for socks. For this method start with a loop on the needle. For a video tutorial of cable cast on click here: http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/cable-cast-on-english

Knitting on – This is very similar to cable cast on except that you knit into the stitch at the fron or back instead of knitting between stitches. It’s a good method for making button holes. For a video tutorial of Knitting on click here: http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/knitting-on-english

Long Tail Cast on (aka continental cast on, double casting on) – I learnt this method quite recently, it creates a looser and elastic cast on edge, I find it ideal when knitting hats. It took a bit of getting used to for me as you use one needle and your thumb, it is supposed a good cast on method for beginners. Single cast on (aka backward loop cast on) – This is a very easy method of casting on and is particularly good for a hem edge or for lace, the downside is it is tricky to work off the needle in the first row. For a video tutorial of single cast on click here: http://www.knittinghelp.
