Works in Progress: Seasons 52 to emphasize seasonal foods

A new department store for the Westside, a Mandarin subdivision, new restaurants in the Town Center and a really big soccer rug. Also, a lot of Family Dollars are coming, including one downtown. Here's a look at developments around the area:

Seasons 52

The building you can see from Butler Boulevard going up at Markets of Town Center is Seasons 52.

It's part of the Orlando-based Darden restaurant group, which is the world's largest and includes Red Lobster, Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, The Capital Grille and Bahama Breeze. The last two are already in the Town Center, and Seasons 52 will be right across Big Island Drive from Capital Grille.

The restaurant's emphasis is on seasonal foods, and every item on the menu is less than 475 calories. Opening is expected in the fall.

Anchor Plaza

A new store called dd's Discounts is going in Anchor Plaza, in the 6900 block of 103rd Street. Buildout, which will cost $750,000, is already under way, and the store is expected to be open by fall.

The store is part of the Ross Dress for Less chain and features discount clothes, though reviews indicate it's priced below Ross. There are 67 dd's, including seven in Florida. This will be the first one north of Orlando.

Ross Dress for Less has six stores in the Jacksonville area.

The 20,665-square-foot space last housed a gym but has been empty for a while.

Verizon

The building going up at University Boulevard and St. Augustine Road will be a Verizon store. But it won't be owned by Verizon. Instead, it will be what the company calls an authorized retailer.

This store will be owned and operated by Cellular Sales, a Knoxville, Tenn., company that is the largest Verizon authorized retailer. It currently has five stores in the Jacksonville area.

Opening is expected in late August or September.

Silverthorn

The 10 acres being cleared at Old St. Augustine and Plummer Grant roads are making way for a new subdivision called Silverthorn. It's being developed by Plummer Grant LLC, which purchased the property last month for $914,800. It last sold in 1991 for $315,000.

The development will have 43 homesites at least 60 feet wide and 110-135 feet deep. Rick Wood, speaking for Plummer Grant, said a builder has been chosen but that he can't announce who it is yet.

He said he wasn't sure, but he guessed the homes would be in the $250,000-$300,000 range.
