Bond to pay for vehicles, equipment, roads

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Township Committee will vote on an ordinance appropriating $2.425 million for capital improvements after a public hearing this Wednesday, June 22 at 6 p.m. at the Egg Harbor Township Municipal Building.

Township Administrator Peter Miller said the money will pay for police, fire, and public works equipment, along with road improvements and new computer and communications equipment.

The Egg Harbor Township Police Department will receive nearly $300,000 of the appropriation. Four new fully-equipped SUVs are on the way, and the department will switch over to an e-ticketing program.

“We’ll be able to issue electronic tickets so we get away from the paper tickets,” Miller said Tuesday, June 13. “With the new program, a police officer can enter everything in through the computer, process the ticket, print it out in the car, and hand it to them. All of the information gets entered into the police and court system, which eliminates clerical time.”

The department will also receive 10 new rifles.

“Every patrol officer is supposed to have a rifle with him in his car,” Miller explained. “Periodically, as they age we replace them.”

The Egg Harbor Township Public Works Department will get $500,000 in new tools and equipment.

“The big ticket items are two front-end loaders,” Miller said.

One is a 3.5-cubic-yard articulating front-end loader and the other is a 1.5-cubic-yard machine. In addition, the Public Works Department will receive a new 1-ton truck and a new detachable grapple crane loader, along with other odds and ends.

“What this thing does is basically have a grappling hook on it, and as the crane swings around it can pick up piles of material,” Miller said of the detachable crane.

It will be used to collect storm debris, downed trees, and washed up material, he said, and the detachable nature of the grapple crane will allow the township to mount it on a multi-purpose truck.

“If we only use the thing 20 or 30 times a year, we don’t need a separate truck for it,” said Miller. “We just roll this thing on and hook it on. That way, we’re using one chassis for three or four different functions.”

The Egg Harbor Township Fire Department will get three new vehicles and new equipment at a cost of around $190,000 total.

“One of the fire inspector’s vehicles, a 2001 Dodge van, has over 100,000 miles on it,” Miller said. “We’re going to replace that.
