Jewelry store owner speaks out about burglary arrests

Eight Florida men are behind bars in connection with a multi-state jewelry theft ring in Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Connecticut.

Jose Betancourt, 43, of Miami, Yenier Cardentey, 31, of Miami Gardens, Juan Collado-Miranda, 44, of Coral Gables, Juan Manresa-Leyva, 41, of Hollywood, Abelardo Pena-Cardentey, 33, of Fort Lauderdale, Maykel Roque, 27, of Miami Gardens, Tony Sanchez, 26, of Miami, and Yaubri Suarez, 30, of Hialeahel were arrested between May 19 and May 24 and charged with racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering.

Officials say the high-end burglary ring, based in Miami, operated with multiple crews of burglars who would burglarize jewelry stores and pawn shops by cutting holes in the roof, disabling alarms and surveillance systems and using torches to access safes. Authorities estimate the value of the jewelry stolen at more than $6 million. 

In Knox County, Florida investigators said the ring targeted Enix Jewelry in Halls in in December 2008, where they got away with half a million dollars worth of merchandise.  They also attempted a burglary at Knox Jewelry and Loan later that same month, but they didn't succeed because Knox County deputies arrived.

Bill Enix, owner of Enix Jewelry, said the arrests bring him closure. "It doesn't get the merchandise back that my customers lost, or our inventory back, but we've been blessed to be able to recover and stay in business," said Enix.

Enix told 10News, he has managed to also pay back his customers who lost items in the heist, even though he knows he can't replace their memories.

"They broke the law. They've ruined and hurt and affected a lot of people," said Enix.

Enix still has the safe the crooks broke into in his store.  The hole is hidden inside.  He said he has ramped up security since the burglary to protect his business.

"The Office of Statewide Prosecution and FDLE worked on this investigation for nearly two years with law enforcement throughout the Eastern United States," stated Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. "The large-scale cooperation among the various law enforcement agencies was a vast undertaking that will result in justice for the victims of these burglaries."

"This group moved fast and hit targets in multiple jurisdictions but they underestimated the level of sophistication and collaboration among our law enforcement agencies," said Commissioner Gerald Bailey.
