BANKOLE,CORRUPTION IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE: HOW WE GOT HERE

The 7th National Assembly is taking off now courtesy of the just successfully concluded general election we had which was quickly followed up with the swearing in of the President His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebeble Jonathan on May 29. 2011 Nigerians are still savouring the successful inauguration following accolade we are receiving from every corner of the world. But the Federal House of Representative is giving us sleeplessness through the grand deception of Hon or (dishonourable) Dimeji Bankole over his inability to explain how he has misappropriated a whopping N10Billion as loan on behalf of his fellow assembly men without their notice. Before now, it has been common knowledge that the lower and upper houses had been notoriously fending for their stomach given the way they had approved for themselves salary and deafening allowances at regular intervals without regards to the status quo. Earlier, the house had been accused of Car deals, House refurbishing deals etc. The embarrassments had caused some to equate the remuneration of a single assembly man's income per annum to the gross annual salary of over 40 senior army officers, or medical doctors, or professors! etc. Hon Bankole's is the first in the line. Many will join soon to queue for the EFCC cell for similar offences.

We all knew that the bubble would burst one day, just that this seem sooner than expected due to the success of the Professor Attahiru Jega's conduct of election 2011.

In the Second Republic 1979-1983, it was corruption galore as Dr. Umaru Dikko destroyed the good will of Alhaji Shehu Shagari in Rice importation saga and Alhaji Bello Maitama Yesuf the then Minister for Commerce issue Import License for even sand importation. Same was common during the 1999-2003; 2003-2007, were it was bribe galore as the new bribe for budget approval was the other of the day.

The rot in the civil service and politics scene had been noticed many years past hence late General Muritala Muhammed, and his team graphically documented the list of serving military officers and civil servant perceived to have been corrupt in 1976 and on arrival through a coup d'état, summarily dismissed many of them in various categories. The exercise continued with sacking of officers even for five minutes lateness to work. Things start working well again and the populace heaved a sigh of relief because sanity was returning to Nigeria.
