D'Arbonne hosting Fishing Derby

Lake D'Arbonne State Park is hosting the annual Kids Fishing Derby beginning at 8 a.m. June 11 at the park. The fishing starts at 9 a.m.

This is Free Fishing Day in all Louisiana State Parks. The first 100 kids will receive a free telescopic fishing pole — ready to use — donated by the Association of Louisiana Bass Clubs.

"This is a big event for kids and families," said park director Jon Whitherington. "It's free for the kids to fish and they have a great time. We hope everyone will come out and enjoy the derby and the park."

Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department will again co-host the derby as part of Free Fishing Day.

Kids will fish for one hour and prizes will be awarded in two age groups for the first fish, largest fish and most fish. All fishing will take place from the banks and piers at the park.

A bait casting contest will also be a part of the morning's activities for kids ages 6 to 9 and 10 to 14.

Also, this year Academy Sports has donated two bicycles that will be given away, one for a boy and one for a girl registered in the derby.
