LET THEM EAT CAKE
"Let them eat cake"....the infamous quote attributed to Marie Antoinette before the French Revolution, but it seems that the lady was in fact innocent, if modern historians are to be believed. The quote was aimed at the masses of French people protesting about the fact that they could no longer afford to buy bread – the staple diet of millions of South Africans.
In recent years, the country’s major bread producers - Premier Foods, Tiger Brands, Foodcorp and Pioneer Foods - have all been found guilty of collusion in upping the bread price in an uncompetitive manner. Seeing as they control 90% of the wheat flour market, it was a simple matter to fix prices. Among them, they paid a massive penalty – reported to be in the 10 figures range – but have you witnessed any reduction in the bread price?
Woolworths did bring down its house brand bread prices last year, but equivalent loaves which are produced by the above-mentioned companies are still costly in my book. Pick n Pay recently sold Albany Sliced Brown loaves at R6.99 – obviously as a promotional loss leader, whereas the same loaves were selling at R8.49 in Checkers and R9.99 at Spar, and if you cast your eye along the shelves, there is not much difference in the price structure of the various brands. The same Albany loaves are R8.49 in Pick n Pay right now.
I can clearly remember Peter Matlare of Tiger Brands coming out with a statement that “consumers would soon reap the benefit as bread prices were set to tumble”, or words to that effect, some time last year – perhaps a reduction of 30 cents a loaf is seen as a “tumble” but in a country with 25% unemployment, 30 cents means nothing when the base price of a loaf of bread is around R8 and you have no income.
The government is hell-bent on the introduction of a bill to protect information - the Protection of Information Bill – which will allow it to decide what we should know about and what should be kept secret from us – it is as simple as that. It has introduced other restrictive measures, such as FICA and RICA, aimed at the erosion of our constitutional right to privacy, all of which will be subject of future columns. Yet it is powerless to put a ceiling on the retail price of maize, samp, rice, bread, milk and poultry – all staple dietary products.
