Howdy Days fun for all ages
Kids and adults alike had fun at Fort Morgan parks during Howdy Days Saturday.The morning started off with a community breakfast hosted by the Fort Morgan Lions Club and the annual Becky Thatcher and Huck Finn costume contest sponsored by the Sunrise Optimists Club.
Lane, 8, and Cody Wyatt, 11, of Galeton took first and second place respectively as the best imitators of Huck Finn, with Lane winning a $30 gift certificate to Cables Grill and Cody a $20 certificate to Walmart. Wyatt Underwood, 5, Fort Morgan, took third place for a $10 Walmart certificate.
Ivy Holguin, 3, took first place as the best Becky Thatcher, with Laiken Graff, 3, in second place and Brook Channel, 10, in third. All the girls were of Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher imitators vie for prizes for the best lookalikes at Fort Morgan City Park during Howdy Days Saturday. It was easy to see why Lane and Cody won the Huck Finn contest.
Judges looked at whether the costume included one dangling suspender, ragged pants with the legs dragging in the dirt, dirty clothes, a straw hat with holes, a corn cob pipe, a willow pole with string for fishing, a can of worms, freckles, reddish-brown hair and bare feet.
The Wyatts had almost all of those, plus paint cans for painting Tom Sawyer`s fence. They were in Fort Morgan to visit their grandmother.
Judges looked at the Becky Thatcher lookalikes for a full skirt, white apron, sunbonnet and pantalettes, yellow hair in two long braids, a parasol, black or white flat slippers, white gloves and socks or stockings which did not allow any leg to show.
All of these characteristics were gleaned from the Mark Twain stories about the characters.
"What great outfits," said announcer Rob Kelley. "They`re all winners."
Many of the imitators then headed down to the fishing derby, where more than 150 children came to claim free fishing poles and some instruction in the sport.
