Gone fishin'!: Nothin' like a beer batter fish filet

When I was about 8 I won a prize for the best decorated bicycle in the “Fourth of July Bicycle Parade” and got an awesome fly rod. My dad took me down to the lake and we threw out the line until I got the hang of it. Several days later I came home sobbing with the pole in my hand and the fly in my butt and learned the painful lesson that every veteran of fly casting seems to learn at one time or another. Years later we used to drive to northern Wisconsin to do some real fishing with my in-laws. My mother-in-law loved to fish, and the catch was stored and frozen in empty half-gallon paper milk cartons filled with the cleaned fish and lake water. Later on in winter we would be invited for one of her evenings of “fried fish.” It took several days for the house to air out, but it was wonderful eating while it lasted. She would serve several kinds of cole slaw and fresh rye bread with butter and platters of fried fish. She would bread the larger bottom feeder filets with just egg wash and flour and fry them golden brown. The little perch and sunfish would also receive the flour dusting and everyone would start by eating the crispy tails first.
