New Program at Prison Teaches Dog Training, Care Skills
— A new program introduced at Mission Creek Corrections Center for Women in Belfair is training offenders to work with dogs. Called Prison Pet Partnership Program, it has been successful at Washington Corrections Center for Women in Purdy for many years, and a pilot was launched at MCCCW in March.So far, about a dozen women have participated in the first obedience training class, which will graduate in June. By July, program staff is expecting to have two or three dogs housed at the prison, in the care of offenders who will be selected through a competitive process. The dogs will be trained and prepared for adoption by community members, and after the dogs “graduate,” more will be placed with the PPPP for training.
“The purpose is to give the women general training skills they can take into the community, and also teach them some personal skills like responsibility, commitment and communication,” said Nicole Ribeiro, who joined PPPP in January as the training assistant at Mission Creek. “We try to teach life skills through the dog training course and give them something they will be successful at and be proud of in their life.”
The Prison Pet Partnership Program is an offshoot of a K-9 program that was offered at the Purdy prison in the 1980s through Tacoma Community College (education in prison was coordinated through state colleges at the time). When the program was cut due to funding, volunteers and offenders worked to create a private nonprofit in 1990. PPPP operates with five staff and 35 volunteers, as well as nearly 20 inmate employees who are paid to groom the dogs and run the kennel.
Beth Rivard, PPPP executive director, said one of the reasons for the expansion into Mission Creek Corrections Center is continuity for the offenders. Many women are transferred to MCCCW for a short term prior to their release, and many of them are PPPP participants.
“It’s been more difficult to help them find jobs because they go there,” she said. “It’s also an opportunity for other women and for bringing in more animals and supporting the community.”
Loralee Savidge, who is serving the remainder of her term at MCCCW until 2013, is one of the women who participated in the program at Purdy and enrolled in the obedience class at Mission Creek. She hopes to be a trainer once she’s back in the community.
“It changed my life. I fell in love with the program and I’ve focused my future in this industry,” she said.
